Booking and Value for Money Qantas Economy Hong Kong to Sydney
For a return fare priced at £420, around $600 USD, this Qantas flight offered strong value considering it included food, drinks, checked luggage, and air miles. Scoot was the cheapest option at around $400 USD return, but without any of these inclusions. Qantas also came in about $100 USD cheaper than Cathay Pacific, making it the most affordable full-service airline on this route.
Qantas currently operates 35 Airbus A330 aircraft, 10 of which are the 300-variant used for international routes. These planes have an average age of 19 years, and while they show some age, they remain reliable and comfortable enough for medium to long haul journeys.
Boarding at Hong Kong Airport and Cabin First Impressions
Boarding at Hong Kong International Airport was smooth and well managed, with passengers called by group number for an orderly process. I was seated in 31G, an aisle seat in the main economy cabin. The economy cabin was in a generous 2-4-2 layout although the 31 inch seat pitch and 17 inch width are not particularly spacious for a flight of this length.
Qantas’ Airbus A330 300 features 269 seats in total, with 28 Business Class seats at the front and no Premium Economy section. Despite the limited legroom, the cabin was spotless, and a pillow and blanket were already placed on each seat before boarding.

Seat Comfort Legroom and Power
Each economy seat is fitted with Qantas’ updated Panasonic eX3 entertainment system featuring an 11.1 inch touchscreen that was clear and easy to navigate. The four way adjustable headrest made the seat much more comfortable and made resting easier during the night flight. There was a USB charging port, and shared AC power sockets beneath the seat. While the aircraft design felt slightly dated, it was well maintained, tidy, and pleasant to travel in.

In Flight Entertainment Qantas Hong Kong – Sydney Economy
The entertainment system was one of the highlights of the journey. It was smooth, intuitive, and offered a great variety of Western and international films. I watched I Know What You Did Last Summer and Final Destination but there were plenty of newer titles as well.
Headphones were provided but were very basic, so I would recommend bringing your own for better sound quality. There was no WiFi on this flight, though the entertainment selection easily kept me occupied.

Food and Beverage on Qantas Hong Kong Sydney Flight
Qantas does not offer printed menus in Economy Class, but meal choices appear conveniently on the entertainment screen which is a nice touch compared to just being put on the spot with the ‘Chicken or Beef’ question. Two meals were served during the flight whilst beer, wine, spirits, and all non-alcoholic drinks were complimentary throughout.
Dinner (served shortly after takeoff)
Options included pasta with tomato and ratatouille, Sichuan pork noodles, or teriyaki chicken with pak choi. Each was served with a couscous salad, bread roll, lemon rosemary thyme butter, and chocolate ice cream for dessert. I chose the Sichuan pork noodles, which were full of flavour and genuinely delicious for an economy meal.
Breakfast (served about one hour before landing)
Choices were scrambled eggs with beef sausage, baked beans, hash brown, and cherry tomato, or a seasonal fruit plate. I went for the cooked breakfast, which was hot, hearty, and a great way to start the day before landing in Sydney.
A nice extra was the self-serve snack bar at the back of the plane, offering fresh fruit, crisps, and biscuits throughout the flight. It was a thoughtful touch that made the long journey more enjoyable.
