Virgin Atlantic Upper Class London to San Francisco Flight Overview
Flight Duration: 11 hours
Departure Time: 11:15 AM (Daily flight from Terminal 3 LHR), lands at SFO at 2:15 PM local time (8 hours behind)
Aircraft: Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Flight Number: VS19
Virgin Atlantic Upper Class London to San Francisco is one of the most popular transatlantic business class routes from Heathrow, and on this Boeing 787 flight I tested the seat, onboard bar, food, service, and the Clubhouse experience at Terminal 3. I also share which seats to avoid on the older herringbone layout, what the menus were like, and whether Upper Class is worth paying around £2700 return in 2026.
Booking Value and Typical Upper Class Prices
At a hefty £2700 return from London Heathrow LHR to San Francisco SFO, Virgin Atlantic Upper Class sits at the premium end of transatlantic travel. Virgin frequently prices higher than competitors such as British Airways and I rarely see any good business class deals in the Virgin sales. As such, the key question here is whether the experience justifies this punchy round trip cost.
Boarding at Heathrow Terminal 3 and Pre Departure Drinks
Boarding was smooth and efficient, with Upper Class passengers invited first. Pre departure drinks of champagne or orange juice were served in proper glasses, which was a great way to start our flight. Menus, pillows and amenity kits were waiting at the seat prior to takeoff.
Virgin Atlantic’s mood lighting on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner created a relaxing and modern feel throughout the flight.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Seat on the Boeing 787
Now here’s where Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class product on the Boeing 787 shows its age. The older herringbone 1-1-1 configuration is far from the most comfortable business class design.
The seats face away from the windows, so passengers cannot enjoy views during take-off and landing unless fully reclined. The seats also feel narrow and cramped, with limited storage space. The middle and right-hand seats angle toward each other, meaning you can end up facing a stranger directly. Therefore, I recommend booking the left hand side seats for better privacy if you’re travelling solo or booking the middle and right hand seats if you’re travelling as a couple.
That said, every seat offers direct aisle access and comes with a comfy ottoman footstool, so it’s not all bad by any means!
Amenity Kit Pyjamas and Turn Down Service
The amenity kit or “goodie bag” was sustainable, made from recycled materials with reduced plastic. It included a bamboo toothbrush, eye mask, lotion, toothpaste, socks, pen, and ear plugs.
Whilst this was a day flight I must mention that our overnight return leg saw Virgin provide pyjamas which was an absolute a standout compared to its competitors like BA. Furthermore, the return flight had a full ‘turn-down service’ complete with hot chocolate, peppermint and chamomile tea, plus shortbread.

The Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Bar Experience
A standout feature of Virgin Upper Class is the bar at the back of the cabin. Passengers can order cocktails, champagne, wine, and spirits, as well as help themselves to snacks such as crisps and shortbread.
It is a fun and unique perk of the Virgin Upper Class experience, but it can make the rear of the cabin noisier so avoid choosing a seat near the bar if you want to get some sleep.

Food and Drink Menus on Virgin Atlantic Upper Class
During this flight Virgin delivered strongly in the food and drink department.
The first service was a full three course lunch paired with a wine list. You can read the menus below, but the highlights for me was the minted pea Tortellini main and the cheese board for dessert.
The Champagne Ayala Brut Majeur was the Champagne on offer, meanwhile there was a decent selection of beers on offer including Camden Hells Lager, Stella Artois, and Budweiser. Spirits were extensive and included Aviation Gin, Aberfeldy 12 year Scotch, Grey Goose vodka, Bacardi rum, Regal Rogue Vermouth, and Quinto Do Noval Port. The cocktails and mocktails menu were a fun addition as well.
The second meal service was a very British afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes, and scones. I do love the cute mini-Tiptree strawberry jams which is my favourite jam. No complaints at all with this second meal service!

In-Flight Entertainment and Wi-Fi Pricing
The entertainment screen was large, responsive, and offered an excellent library of films, including recent blockbusters. Perfect for keeping me entertained on this 11-hour flight. Wi Fi was available but came at a cost £17 for 150MB or £40 for 500MB. Standard for many airlines, but disappointing given the premium ticket price.

Cleanliness and Facilities
Bathrooms were basic but kept clean throughout the flight. They were stocked with soap and hand lotion only, but the constant upkeep by crew kept them fresh throughout the duration of the flight.

Cabin Crew Service
Virgin Atlantic staff excelled throughout the journey. Friendly, professional, and attentive without being too overbearing. They came round several times between meal services as well, which really felt like they genuinely cared about our flight experience.
Final Verdict: Is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Worth It?
This was a really excellent flight with Virgin overall, from the food, the service and the onboard bar. It is just a shame about the slightly dated business class product and the fact that their air fares are often pricier on these transatlantic routes compared to competitors. If you have the air miles or can find an Upper Class sale with Virgin, then I would not hesitate to recommend what is a pretty solid overall experience.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class LHR to SFO FAQs
Is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class LHR to SFO worth it in 2026?
If you value food, service, and the bar experience, yes. If your top priority is a modern seat for sleeping, the older herringbone layout feels dated for the price.
What is the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class seat like on the Boeing 787?
It is a 1-1-1 herringbone layout with direct aisle access for every passenger, but it lacks privacy and the window seats face away from the window.
Which seats are best in Virgin Atlantic Upper Class on the 787?
Solo travellers should aim for the left hand seats for better privacy. Couples often prefer the middle and right side pairing, but it depends on how much you mind facing inward.
Does Virgin Atlantic Upper Class have an onboard bar?
Yes. The bar is a key part of the Upper Class experience and serves cocktails, champagne, wine, and snacks, but seats near the bar can be noisier.
Do you get pyjamas in Virgin Atlantic Upper Class?
On your overnight return you did, and that is a strong perk versus many competitors. Day flights may not always include them.
Is Wi-Fi free in Virgin Atlantic Upper Class?
Not on this flight. Wi-Fi was paid, which is a negative given the premium ticket price.
