2. Luxx Lounge Frankfurt Airport Terminal 1 (6 out of 10)
The Luxx Lounge ranks second but is considerably cheaper than the Lufthansa lounge.
A three-hour visit costs £24 (€28), making it a useful option if you arrive early and want somewhere to eat, shower, work or relax before passing through security.
The lounge is located landside on Level 4 between Departure Halls B and C. Departing passengers must therefore leave enough time to clear security afterwards.
Inside, there is a mixture of leather armchairs and café-style tables. Large windows provide natural light, but there are no runway or aircraft views.
During our late-morning visit, the lounge was busy, warm and stuffy. Its long and narrow layout also created congestion around the central buffet area.

Food and drinks
Breakfast included scrambled eggs, Frankfurter sausages, pancakes, bread, croissants, cereals and fruit.
The eggs and sausages were dry and cold, although we visited near the end of breakfast service. The warm pancakes were much better.
Lunch included chicken breast, potato gratin and a basic salad bar. Fruit, pastries, peanuts and tortilla crisps were also available.
The alcoholic drinks selection was respectable for the price, with Bitburger lager, Prosecco, wine, gin, vodka, Campari and Bourbon whisky. Soft drinks, water, ice and lemon were also provided, although the coffee was a little disappointing.

The Lufthansa Business Lounge Z Gates is the best paid lounge at Frankfurt Airport Terminal 1 that we have reviewed.
It is also something of a hidden gem. Eligible Lufthansa economy and premium-economy passengers can purchase access for €49, even without business-class tickets or elite status.
The lounge is enormous, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Frankfurt Airport apron and runway area. Seating includes armchairs, dining tables, high stools, privacy-screen seats and dedicated workstations. Its size created a calm atmosphere during our visit.
There are also complimentary showers, clean toilets, reliable Wi-Fi, plentiful charging ports and a customer service desk.
For passengers spending several hours at the airport, the €49 entry price represents strong value.

Food and drinks
The food selection was the main weakness.
Hot options included chicken tikka masala with rice, ratatouille, a breaded vegetable pocket and two soups. Warm pretzels were one of the highlights. Cold options included salads, fruit, bread rolls, mousse desserts and cakes. Everything we tried was tasty, but the selection felt slightly limited for such a large lounge.
On the other hand, the drinks selection was much stronger.
There was self-serve draught Beck’s lager, bottled Budweiser and an extensive spirits range, including Grey Goose vodka and Bombay Sapphire gin. Champagne was not available, but Prosecco, sparkling wine, rosé, white wine and red wine were provided. The premium spirits, draught beer and Lufthansa-branded glasses made the drinks area one of the strongest parts of the lounge.
Workstations, Wi-Fi and charging
The lounge is particularly suitable for working.
A dedicated workstation area contains proper desks, European sockets, UK sockets and USB charging ports. Charging points are also widely available throughout the lounge, while the Wi-Fi worked reliably during our visit.
Showers and toilets
Complimentary showers are available and can be booked at the dedicated shower reception desk. Towels and premium soaps are included. There was also no wait during our visit which made the whole experience feel pretty smooth.
The toilets were also clean and well maintained.
