We booked Lufthansa’s Economy Light fare for this journey from London Heathrow, with this review being the return leg.
The Economy Light fare included one small personal item that had to fit underneath the seat in front. A larger cabin bag for the overhead lockers was not included, nor was checked baggage.
This felt particularly restrictive considering return flights were around £200 (around USD 250). Lufthansa positions itself as a full-service flag carrier, yet the basic baggage allowance was less generous than the standard fares offered by several European low-cost airlines.
Passengers who need more luggage can instead book an Economy Classic fare, which includes:
- One small personal item
- One larger cabin bag for the overhead lockers
- One checked bag weighing up to 23kg
Seat selection became free when online check-in opened 24 hours before departure, which was a welcome positive. This allowed us to select seats without paying an additional fee.
However, the overall value of the Economy Light fare was difficult to justify. Lufthansa charged considerably more than several budget airlines on the route while providing a broadly similar baggage allowance and onboard service.

Boarding Process and Timing: Lufthansa Airbus A320neo Economy Review
Boarding at Frankfurt Airport was organised by group number and the overall process was efficient.
Passengers were required to take a bus from the terminal to the aircraft. Bus boarding is rarely the most convenient way to start a flight, but the process was handled smoothly and there were no significant delays.
The crew were smiley, friendly and welcoming as passengers boarded.
The aircraft pushed back on time and landed at London Heathrow as scheduled. Strong punctuality was one of the most positive aspects of the experience.
Seat Comfort and Charging Ports
The Lufthansa City Airlines Airbus A320neo had a standard 3-3 economy-class seating layout.
Seat pitch was just 29 inches, which is tight for a full-service European carrier. Legroom was noticeably limited and taller passengers may find the seating uncomfortable on longer flights.
Fortunately, the seats themselves were better than the measurements might suggest. They were covered in soft leather and had more cushioning than the thin, lightweight seats found on many modern short-haul aircraft. The seats felt clean, plush and reasonably comfortable for a flight lasting under two hours. The relatively empty cabin also improved the experience. With the aircraft only around 60% full, the atmosphere remained quiet and relaxed throughout the flight.
USB charging ports were available at the seats, which was a useful feature. However, there was no onboard Wi-Fi available during this flight, nor seat-back entertainment screens, although this is expected on a short European service.
Food and Drink on Lufthansa Airbus A320neo Economy
The complimentary food and drinks service was extremely limited.
Each passenger received:
- One small bottle of water
- One small piece of Lindt chocolate
Although the chocolate was a pleasant branded touch, the service felt almost pointless. There was no complimentary tea, coffee, soft drink or meaningful snack included.
Additional food and drinks were available to purchase from the onboard menu.
This level of service would be understandable on a budget airline. However, Lufthansa was charging around £200 for a return journey while presenting itself as a full-service flag carrier.
Providing only water and a small piece of chocolate made it feel as though Lufthansa was cutting costs wherever possible without passing those savings on to passengers.
Crew, Cleanliness and Cabin Atmosphere
The aircraft was modern, clean and well maintained. The cabin was spotless when we boarded, while the relatively low passenger load helped maintain a calm and quiet atmosphere throughout the journey. The crew were one of the strongest parts of the flight. They were smiley, friendly and professional during boarding and throughout the onboard service.
Is Lufthansa Airbus A320neo Economy Class Worth Booking?
The Lufthansa Airbus A320neo Economy Class experience provided a clean aircraft, comfortable leather seats, USB charging ports, friendly crew and excellent punctuality.
However, the 29-inch seat pitch was tight, Wi-Fi was unavailable and the complimentary service consisted of only a small bottle of water and a piece of chocolate.
The Economy Light baggage allowance was the biggest disappointment. Including only a personal item felt particularly restrictive when return tickets cost around £200.
Overall, the experience was not significantly better than flying with a European low-cost airline. A budget carrier would likely offer a similar seat and onboard service at a lower price, although Lufthansa’s friendly crew, comfortable seat cushioning and reliable operation were positives.
Lufthansa economy may still be worthwhile when its schedule or airport is more convenient. However, it would be difficult to justify paying a large premium over a budget airline for this level of service.
