Location and opening hours
One of the main differences between the two lounges is simply where they are located in the terminal, so your departure gate may influence which one is more practical.
Kyra Lounge Gate 23 is located air side after security on the 6th floor next to gate 23. It is open daily from 5:30 AM until 11:30 PM.
Kyra Lounge Gate 40 is located air side on level 7 in the West Hall near gate 40. It is open daily from 6:00 AM until 12:30 AM.
Both lounges are accessible with Priority Pass, which makes them useful options for economy class travellers passing through Hong Kong who still want a premium pre-flight experience.
If your flight departs later at night, Gate 40 does have the advantage of staying open a little longer.
Seating and atmosphere Kyra Lounge Hong Kong Gate 23 vs Gate 40
This is where the biggest difference between the two lounges appears.
Kyra Lounge Gate 23 feels sleek, bright, and stylish. It has plenty of armchair seating, café style seating for dining, and some very good tarmac views from the floor to ceiling windows. During our visit it felt particularly calm, which made it a very relaxing place to spend a layover.
Kyra Lounge Gate 40 feels slightly more varied in its design. It has several distinct seating zones, including a darker and cosier section at the back with private armchairs, plants, and even an electric fireplace. That gives it a slightly more interesting and more spacious feel overall.
If you want the better views and natural light, Gate 23 wins. If you want the more varied and flexible seating layout, Gate 40 wins.
Food and drinks Kyra Lounge Hong Kong Gate 23 vs Gate 40
Food and drink are a major strength of both lounges, and there is very little between them here.
At both lounges, the buffet offering was strong for a contract lounge. There was a very good mix of hot dishes and cold items, with enough choice for a proper meal rather than just a light snack. Food included items such as spring rolls, noodles, pasta, soups, crispy pork with egg fried rice, fruit, salads, yoghurts, and dessert options.
The standout feature at both lounges is the cocktail menu. This instantly makes the Kyra Lounge experience feel more premium than the average contract lounge. Both lounges had a fully tended bar, a strong spirits selection, wines, beer, and a list of cocktails and mocktails. Drinks such as the ‘Fragrant Harbour’ and ‘Bloom Time’ were genuine highlights.
Neither lounge offered Champagne, which is really the main drinks weakness across both.
Overall, we would call this category a draw. The food and drinks were excellent at both Gate 23 and Gate 40.
Wi-Fi and amenities
Both lounges performed well here, although again there are some small differences.
Kyra Lounge Gate 23 had very fast Wi-Fi and plenty of charging ports, which made it especially good if you want to catch up on work or charge devices before boarding.
Kyra Lounge Gate 40 also had reliable Wi-Fi and modern, sleek bathrooms, with stylish touches such as plants in the toilet area that made the lounge feel a little more polished.
The big shared downside is that neither lounge has shower facilities. At a major transit airport like Hong Kong, that is definitely disappointing, especially for long haul connections.
So if charging and working matter most, Gate 23 has a slight edge. If you care more about polished design details and a stylish overall feel, Gate 40 has a small advantage.
Which Kyra Lounge is better for plane views?
If plane views matter to you, Kyra Lounge Gate 23 is the better pick.
It has better natural light and slightly stronger tarmac views, which gives it the edge for aviation enthusiasts and anyone who simply likes a brighter lounge environment. Gate 40 still has a pleasant atmosphere, but Gate 23 felt better for this specific category.
