This Virgin Atlantic long haul economy review covers Virgin Atlantic flight VS117 from London Heathrow to Miami, a 10 hour 25 minute direct service that is ideal for a daytime departure and an evening arrival. I flew long haul economy to see how comfortable the cabin really is on a ten hour flight, whether the 2-4-2 seat layout on the A330-900neo makes a meaningful difference, and how Virgin Atlantic performs for entertainment, food and drink, cleanliness, and crew service on the London to Miami route.

Booking and Value Virgin Atlantic Long Laul Economy Review

The flights cost £390 return which was almost identical to Virgin’s main competitor for economy, British Airways. These long-haul American flights are pretty cheap when you consider the cost of travelling around Europe in peak holiday season which can easily exceed £400 per person.

Boarding Process and Timing

Boarding at Terminal 3 was smooth and the flight left on time, which is always a good start for a 10 plus hour journey. The mid-afternoon departure time is ideal as well. It gives you time to get to the airport without a ridiculous wake up, and landing at 21:10 in Miami is a nice time to head straight to the hotel for a long sleep.

Seat Comfort and Cabin Experience

Virgin Atlantic economy on this route feels like a solid option if you want a direct flight with a modern cabin and a genuinely good onboard product. The 31 inch seat pitch is not particularly generous, but it is basically in line with what you will get on British Airways in economy.

Where Virgin really wins for me is the 2-4-2 layout. If you grab a seat on the left or right hand side, you get that window or aisle combo, which is the kind of thing I usually associate with premium economy. On a long flight to Miami, that makes a real difference to comfort and how easy it is to get in and out without climbing over people.

The A330-900neo economy cabin felt modern, clean, and sleek. Even though the pitch is standard, the seat itself is well designed and the adjustable headrest supported sleep properly. I also liked that there were a pillow and a Virgin red blanket waiting at every seat, although a pillow and blanket is pretty standard for long-haul economy.

Power outlets were in between seats and there were USB A plugs available, so no issues with charging up devices.

Entertainment on our Virgin Atlantic Long Haul Economy Review

Virgin’s entertainment system was one of the best parts of the flight. The screens were large, high definition, and responsive. It felt modern and polished, and definitely a step above British Airways economy entertainment system’s on this route.

Virgin’s Red IFE system also had a great selection overall, with loads of films and shows. It is not quite at Emirates level for sheer volume, but it absolutely does the job for a 10 hour flight.

A really nice touch was the headphones. Proper headphones were already at the seat, not the cheap in-ear ones, which is something you normally only see once you get into premium economy or business class.

Food and Beverage Service

After takeoff, pre-dinner drinks came around pretty quickly, and it was a full bar service excluding champagne.

Dinner was very good for economy. I went for the chicken curry, and it came with a side salad, bread roll, salted caramel and chocolate dessert, plus cheese and crackers. Everything was tasty, and the dessert was particularly good. My only criticism is that the curry could have done with a bit more sauce as it was slightly dry.

After dinner, the crew came around again for another drinks service, which I appreciated. The second meal was a small chicken wrap. It was fine, but it could have been more substantial for a flight of over 10 hours. This is one area where it felt similar to British Airways, where that second service can sometimes feel a bit light.

Cleanliness and Facilities

The toilets were kept clean throughout the flight, and the cabin overall felt fresh and well maintained. The A330-900neo is a great aircraft for long haul economy, and this one felt modern and well looked after.

Staff

The crew were attentive, smiley, and friendly, and you could feel the difference compared to a more robotic service style. They were present, they did regular passes, and the overall vibe was warm and attentive.

Before landing, Love Hearts sweets were handed out, even in economy. It is a tiny gesture, but it is the kind of thing that leaves you feeling good about the flight and it really separates Virgin from British Airways, because it feels like they are going a little bit above and beyond.

Final Verdict: Is Virgin Long Haul Economy Worth Booking?

Overall, this was an excellent long haul economy flight with Virgin Atlantic which I would happily book again. The aircraft felt modern and clean, the entertainment was genuinely impressive, the cabin layout is a big win thanks to the 2-4-2 configuration, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Dinner was strong for economy and the little touches like proper headphones and Love Hearts before landing really add to the experience.

The only real negative for me was that the chicken curry was slightly dry and the second meal could have been more substantial for a 10 hour 25 minute flight.
