Getting To Berlin For A Long Weekend

To maximise the long weekend, we got a Thursday evening flight with British Airways at 7:30pm. Due to getting into Berlin at 10:30pm, we took a taxi to the hotel, which cost £50 for a 30 minute trip.

Where To Stay In Berlin For A Weekend Itinerary

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Berlin which was a business-like hotel. Offering hundreds of rooms, an atmospheric bar with live music every night, and a large breakfast buffet, it is a great option for an easy and central hotel that ticks most boxes. Its location is the selling point; placed 10 minutes away from Brandenburg gate and majority of Berlin’s most popular tourist attractions.

Day 1: Exploring Berlin’s Historic City Centre

The first day started early with a 6am run around the city. We personally think this is one of the best ways to explore a city in the peace and quiet. A 10km route meant I covered the expansive Tiergarten park, lit up with a rainbow and sunrise. I was able to cover off most of the main attractions like the victory column, Bellevue Palace, the Reichstag, Brandenburg gate, and Checkpoint Charlie all in one go and without any tourists.

Morning Run Through Tiergarten And Berlin’s Main Sights

After a breakfast at the hotel, we grabbed a coffee from a café called The Sanctuary in Potsdamer Platz. We then made our way to our guided tour that started at Brandenburg gate. This small guided tour was brilliant at giving us so much information about the incredible history of Berlin and showing us all the most important sights all in the space of 3 hours. The memorials were particularly moving and the tour was very thoughtful.

Lunch, Shopping And Dinner In Central Berlin

After the tour we headed for a late long lunch at Monte Mente, an Italian Restaurant next to Henriette Herz-Park. We followed this up with a bit of shopping at a nearby shopping centre before making our way to dinner. We tried Chiaro, a gorgeous restaurant in Hotel de Rome. With excellent service, a sophisticated setting, and delicious food, cocktails, and wine, this was a standout dinner and a great way to end our day.

Day 2: A Slower Berlin Weekend Itinerary With Cafés, Museums And Spa Time

The second day started with another short run to grab a coffee and enjoy the early quiet of the city. We grabbed breakfast at Latana café just down the road from the station where we tucked into avocado toast and pastries. We then slowly walked back past all the historical attractions again, notably Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall.

Rooftop Spa At Grand Hyatt Berlin

We ventured to the hotels rooftop spa which had a panoramic pool, offering a stunning view of the city sky line. With a large jacuzzi, multiple sunbeds, and massages and facials on offer, the hotel spa was a pleasant surprise for such a big business hotel.

Dinner And Cocktails In Berlin

Before dinner we headed to the hotel bar that had inventive and delicious cocktails. Our dinner for the night was biggest Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to: Amrit. This restaurant served amazing curries, with speedy service, and an atmospheric buzz. We would highly recommend this for a laid back and reliable dinner out. To top it all off we stopped at the Haagen-Dazs store for some ice cream before an early night.

Day 3: Day Trip From Berlin To Erkner

An early start was needed to head back to the central station to get ourselves to Erkner to watch the race that our friends were taking part in. Erkner is a small sleepy town 45 minutes outside of Berlin that I wouldn’t necessarily say is worth the trip unless you have a specific reason. The lakeside and woodland course made for a nice view to take in while supporting. After the excitement of the race, we got a train back to Berlin in time for dinner. We returned to Monte Mente as we enjoyed it so much on the first day.

Day 4: Final Morning In Berlin Before Flying Home

Berlin seemed to be sad about us leaving as it poured with rain and left us stranded in a coffee shop for a couple of hours as we waited for our afternoon flight. We then had lunch back at the hotel Bistro which served classics such as club sandwiches, burgers, and Caeser salad.

Final Thoughts On This Berlin Weekend Itinerary

If you’re looking for a city full of jam packed history then Berlin is definitely worth the visit. The city has thoughtfully designed memorials, interesting tours, and is definitely a unique place to soak up the depth of its history. There are also plenty of exciting restaurants, bars, and shopping to do. If we were to return I think it would be worth exploring some of the neighbourhoods outside of the city centre, like Friedrichshain.

FAQs: Berlin Weekend Itinerary

Is Berlin good for a weekend trip?

Yes, Berlin is a brilliant weekend city break if you enjoy history, museums, restaurants, bars, shopping and walkable sightseeing. A 3 or 4 day Berlin weekend itinerary gives you enough time to see major sights such as Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Tiergarten and Checkpoint Charlie without rushing too much.

How many days do you need in Berlin?

For a first visit, 3 to 4 days in Berlin is ideal. A 3 day Berlin itinerary is enough for the main historical attractions, a walking tour, a few restaurants and some museum time. A 4 day Berlin itinerary works better if you want a slower pace, time for cafés, shopping, hotel spa time or a short day trip.

What is the best area to stay in Berlin for a weekend?

For a first Berlin weekend itinerary, staying near Potsdamer Platz, Mitte or Brandenburg Gate works well because many of the city’s main attractions are within walking distance. This makes it easier to visit Tiergarten, the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and several museums without spending too much time on transport.

Is Berlin better for history or luxury travel?

Berlin is strongest as a history and culture destination, but it can still work well for a luxury weekend break. There are fantastic hotels, rooftop spas, cocktail bars, restaurants, shopping areas and stylish cafés, especially around Mitte and Potsdamer Platz. It is not as traditionally glamorous as Paris or Milan, but it offers a more interesting and thought-provoking city break.
