Hong Kong International Airport has several ways to reach the centre of the city, including the Airport Express, overnight buses, and taxis. In this guide we assess the options in terms of ease, timing and cost.

Airport Express from Hong Kong Airport to the city

The Airport Express is usually the best way to get from Hong Kong International Airport into the city. It reaches Hong Kong Station in around 25 minutes and runs every 10 to 15 minutes throughout most of the day. This makes it the quickest and easiest option for most travellers, especially if you are staying in Central or nearby.

A one way ticket is typically around USD 8, while a round trip ticket is around USD 15. Once you arrive at Hong Kong Station, it is easy to connect onto other MTR lines for the rest of your journey. The Airport Express also has free Wi-Fi and plenty of luggage space, which makes it especially convenient after a long flight.

The first train usually departs at around 6AM, while the last service is just before 1AM.

Overnight bus from Hong Kong Airport to the city

If you arrive after the Airport Express has stopped running, the overnight ‘N Series’ buses are the main budget option. These buses operate during the late night and early morning hours when train options are limited.

For Kowloon, the main overnight routes are the N21 and NA21. For Hong Kong Island, the main options are the N11 and NA11. These services are far cheaper than taking a taxi, but they are slower and usually take well over an hour depending on your stop and traffic conditions.

Fares vary by route, but are usually around USD 3 to USD 7 each-way. In general, the night buses are a good low cost option, but not the best choice if you want the quickest or most comfortable transfer after a long flight.

Taxi from Hong Kong Airport to the city

Taxis and private transfers are a convenient option if you are carrying a lot of luggage, travelling as a group, or landing late at night. A taxi into central Hong Kong usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes in lighter traffic, although this can be longer during peak-time periods.

The cost is often around USD 30 to USD 50 to Central, depending on traffic, destination, and any extra charges. This makes a taxi much more expensive than public transport, but it is the easiest direct option if you have lots of luggage.

Late night transport from Hong Kong Airport to the city

If you are arriving late at night, your best option depends on whether you value speed or price more. A taxi is the easiest and fastest late night transfer, especially if you have luggage or are staying some distance from a major MTR station. If you want the cheapest late night option, the N Series buses are the better choice, although they take much longer.

For late arrivals, a taxi is usually the most convenient option because it takes you directly to your accommodation and avoids the slower pace of overnight bus services. This is often the best choice if you are tired, carrying heavy bags, or simply want the simplest journey possible.

Best budget late night option: N Series buses

If keeping costs down is the priority, the N11, N21, NA11, and NA21 are the main overnight bus routes from Hong Kong Airport into the city. They are much cheaper than a taxi, but the trade off is a slower journey and fewer departures.
