Getting to Copenhagen: Luxury Weekend Copenhagen Itinerary

For a quick weekend away flight times can be a make-or-break detail of the trip which was why it was uncommon for us to get a 12pm flight. This relaxed flight time meant that we landed at 2:30pm and weren’t in desperate need of a nap! The return fare was ‘£60’ with Ryanair from London Stansted.

There are multiple ways to get into the city, the easiest being to get the metro. There are a variety of tickets you can get including all access metro cards for 24, 48 or 72 hours. This includes travel to and from the airport and means that you can zoom around the city on the metro without any hesitation. Our 48-hour ticket cost £35 per person, well worth it for the amount we used it.

Where We Stayed: Luxury Weekend Copenhagen Itinerary

We based ourselves at the Grand Joanne hotel situated a few moments from the central train station. This stylish boutique hotel cost £330 per night. The room was cosy but the standout feature was the bar and restaurant that served outstanding coffee, a wide selection of inventive cocktails and wines, and a brilliant breakfast menu. Being next to the central train station meant it was an ultra-convenient location for getting to and from the airport as well as the rest of the city.

Day 1: Getting Our Bearings

Once we dumped our bags off at our accommodation, we headed on a walk to Osterbro where our dinner was booked. We strolled through Fælledparken which was a beautiful big park and then around Osterbro, enjoying Copenhagen’s relaxed atmosphere where everyone was sat outside drinking coffee and wine at 4pm in the sun. There are many trendy cafes, bars, and shops in this area, it feels full of hidden gems.

We watched the sunset sat on the waterfront by Nordhavn station where locals were going for a cold swim in the sea. Next up on the agenda was a nice warm meal. We went to Kini Kini, a Thai restaurant on the waterfront which offered us delicious curries, noodles, and nasi goreng. With gorgeous interiors and even more gorgeous aromas, I would highly recommend this restaurant for a casual but tasty dinner out.

Day 2: Exploring the City

On day 2 we headed out for a 5am run which meant we could explore the city in silence and with the backdrop of a sunrise. The 16km route meant she ran through and past all the major tourist spots including Ørstedsparken, Kongens Have, and the Little Mermaid. This run led us back to the waterfront where we started our bakery tour of Copenhagen.

Bakery number one was Juno Bakery, often thought of as the best bakery in Copenhagen and it lived up to its hype. We tried a cardamon bun, vanilla custard danish, and pain au chocolat. All the pastries were incredible, but the vanilla Danish was a standout. The bakery only offered filter coffee so we headed to another café to grab a coffee on our walk back to the hotel.

Our one full day in the city meant we had a long list of things to tick off. We walked through the beautifully tranquil Østre Anlæg park which is where the SMK art museum is situated. The museum is home to an incredible collection of both historical and modern art with the building alone enough to entice you in. Admission is free but it is best to book a timeslot online.

We headed to the next stop on our bakery tour – Anderson & Maillard. This is a small chain in Copenhagen offering a wide range of tasty pastries and brilliant coffee. We tried a cardamon bun but the espresso croissant and chocolate sea salt cookie looked very appealing. We sat in the rose garden in Kongens Have Park opposite the Rosenberg Castle. We enjoyed the sun and our café treats. While Juno wins the pastry game, Anderson & Maillard offered some of the best coffee I’ve ever had.

The gardens here are outstandingly beautiful and full of family and friends enjoying a day out in the park. The Herkules Pavillonen Café is perfect for a coffee, cocktail and a bite to eat. While the Orangeriet provides beautiful dining in a restaurant that matches its royal surroundings.

We then headed to Torvehallen, an outdoor food market that sells fresh fruit and veg as well as plenty of pop-up stalls selling everything from wine to pasta. We grabbed a baguette for lunch but there are some stalls that you can have a lovely sit down lunch with a glass of wine in the sun.

After lunch we ventured to picture-perfect Nyhavn, where the famous postcard image of colourful houses by the canal are. We wandered up the bustling street and stopped off for a drink with a river view.

For dinner we tried out an amazing Italian restaurant called Cantina. Famous for its tomato vodka pasta, we tried their salami and hot honey pizzas and truffle fries, both of which were amazing. Would highly recommend this for an atmospheric, cool dinner with delicious food.

Day 3: Final day of pastries

We started our day by doing a quick run to a different Anderson & Maillard café where we grabbed coffee and pastries, which were of course amazing. We checked out of the hotel and got the metro back to the Nyhavn area to try the last bakery on our to-do list: Hart Bageri. Offering fresh bread, plenty of pastries, and coffee, Hart is a popular spot, and you can see why when you try some of their croissant-based pastries. We tried a cardamon croissant which was a great twist on the cardamon bun I’d come quite accustomed to having every 2 hours. We also tried the vanilla custard croissant bun which was also delicious. However, we both agreed the coffee wasn’t the best, allowing us to confirm our ranking of bakeries:

  1. Juno
  2. Anderson & Maillard
  3. Hart

To be clear, all these bakeries were incredible and are essentials on a Copenhagen trip!

Our trip ended as we got the metro straight to the airport, which is included in the metro cards. Our flight was at 6:20pm so we headed to the Carlsberg Aviation Lounge beforehand. You can read the full review here.

Final Thoughts: Luxury Weekend Copenhagen Itinerary

Copenhagen is the perfect destination for a relaxing foodie break. As you can tell we were particularly delighted with their pastries and coffee, but the laid back vibe of the city is what makes every aspect of the trip enjoyable. While it can be expensive, it’s extremely accessible, safe, and beautiful city for a long weekend.
